Here’s some more information based on Ubuntu 9.10 install issue I had:

I set up a machine as stated, but I noticed it didn’t work with the Wireless NIC.

When network manager started up, it broke squid. restarting squid after making the wifi connection fixed it.

I didn’t want to mess with anything, so I did this to fix it:

1. remove network-manager and network-manager-gnome
2. edit /etc/network/interfaces:

auto lo wlan0
iface lo inet loopback

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wireless-essid SSIDNAMEHERE
wireless-mode Managed

Note: I do not transmit ssid. You will have to change if you use encryption.

After that I restarted.

All is well now.

And you are part of the problem. Little old ladies buy Windows to email their grandkids and get spyware on their system and not from surfing porn sites, and the OS they PAID for in good faith doesn’t even include antivirus, so she has to shell out $200 of her social security check to her local computer shop to get it working again and you don’t see a problem? ABC.com is morally wrong and so is anyone else who can’t see what is wrong with the garbage Microsoft is pushing to the consumer.

I have been trying to work out Em Es for years, and nothing really adds up. It is hard NOT to get, well, angry about what they are up to and how they not only rip off businesses, but every man and his poor dog. Same price tag for all customers whether they have the money or not it doesn’t bother the foul creatures that run Em Es.

As I always say, “Why not give Linux a go?”

Well, I’ve had my laptop for what? A year and a half I think? I’ve never had a security issue that I can remember (because I don’t go to spam sites) and I can still go to ABC if I want. And now the hardware is breaking and its no longer under warranty plus its outdated anyway, so I’ll just go to my local store and buy one when its on sale. And you know what I’ll get? Vista Well, I guess thats what I will use then… Oh, and ABC will still work.

Linux is a great example here, I agree. I put it down to the fact that I’m addressing the wrong audience when trying to promote Linux. Some people really want it, but are just too scared to make the move.

Because it DOES matter.

What one or two websites do to limit Linux users pales in comparison to the HUGE amount of damage the security plagued M$ OS provides. Many countless worms exist and propagate because of windows. Large portions of the SPAM worldwide are bounced off of unsuspecting windows machines. You illustrate my point. Let’s not blame the symptom, let’s go to the root cause.

The root causes don’t matter. With your ABC example, its true that its ABC’s fault it doesn’t work on linux but you can’t control what ABC does and you can control what OS you use. So why would you willingly use an OS that doesn’t work with what you want to do? If you want to game you don’t use a Mac and if you want to watch ABC you don’t use linux.
